Using Bots to Give Pathologists Faster Access to Data for Life-Changing Decisions

I haven’t blogged that recently, but recently worked on an amazing project that can help revolutionize the way clinicians diagnose patients!

At the end of March, I worked with the fabulous team at the Englander Institute of Precision Medicine (IPM) at Weill Cornell Medical College. Myself, Gavin Bauman, and Andy Reitano joined the Precision Medicine Engineering team for a weeklong hackfest to develop a chatbot that supports both text and voice interactions with the Precision Medicine Knowledgebase (PMKB) for clinical cancer variants and interpretations.

Together we were able to create a bot that accesses the knowledge base, which currently supports 163 genes and 518 variants with 404 clinical interpretations, and gives clinicians the chance to make life-changing clinical decisions at a faster rate.

The medical school launched the PMKB Bot into production in April 2017 and it is available on  Microsoft Teams, Skype, Slack, and WebChat. The cortana skill is next! A case-study of our work can be found here.

Our goal was to bring this content back to the community and show others how they can create a similar bot in the medical industry. Our github repo can be found here. As the bot framework is continuously improving, we are able to add better natural language understanding, as well as make these bots more accessible to users in tons of different mediums.

I had an amazing time working with the team and can’t wait to push the bounds on what this bot can do!
